Immigrant Remittances and Foreign Aid

“Immigrant Remittances and Foreign Aid: Canada and the Migration/Development Nexus” (2021-present)

Liam Swiss (Memorial University, PI) and I are studying the relationship between Canada’s foreign aid and remittance behaviours of immigrants from lower-income countries. Using Statistics Canada’s Study of International Money Transfer (SIMT) and Word Bank’s World Development Indicators data, we examine: 1) how the purposes of remittances vary by gender of the sender and home country context; and 2) how the aid/remittance relationship varies across home country contexts.

This project is funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) Insight Development Grant ($66,700).
